FACHINE Chiliotrichum diffusum

FACHINE Chiliotrichum diffusum

  • fachine

Evergreen, this shrub can grow up to 2m (6.5 feet) high. Fachine was obviously more abundant but has declined being unable to withstand the grazing and disturbance of livestock as settlers arrived. It often still occurs in largish stands particularly along ditches and stream banks in sheltered valleys. Large daisy-like white flowers appear between December and February. Fachine bushes are important habitats for small birds e.g. grass wrens.

Found on East and West Falklands, Fuegia and parts of southern Patagonia.
